|
 |
| |
|
|
| |
Approximately 75 cayucos
(kayaks) are expected to participate in the Ocean-to-Ocean regatta,
which will cover the entire length of the Panama Canal March 18-20.
The world’s first
and only boat race between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, this three-day
event starts at the Cristobal Yacht Club on the Atlantic, and ends
at the Diablo Ramp on the Pacific .
The first day of the competition
starts at Cristobal Yacht Club and ends at the north side of Gatún
Locks. The race continues the following day from the south side of
Gatún Locks to the town of Gamboa. The final leg of the regatta
will cover the entire length of Gaillard (Culebra) Cut to end at the
Diablo Ramp.
This annual event was
started in the early 1950’s as the “Ocean-to-Ocean Cayuco
Race” by the U.S. community stationed in the former Panama Canal
Zone. After the transfer of the Canal from U.S. to Panamanian hands,
in 1999, a number of local organizations and businesses adopted the
event, which has gained international attention in recent years.

Portobelo gets ready for annual Triathlon |
|
| |
|
|
| |
|
Approximately
200 Panamanian and visiting athletes will compete in one of Latin America’s
most difficult sports competitions: the ‘Agua Brisa Portobelo
International Triathlon’, scheduled for Sunday, March 13.
U.S. athlete
Kerry Classen, one of the world’s top triathletes and winner of
last year’s version of the event, will be back to swim 1,800 meters
from the town of La Guayra to Isla Grande; and to take part in the 35-km
bicycle race and the 10 km, cross-country foot race around Portobelo
National Park.
Besides its
level of difficulty, the Portobelo Triathlon is special for various
reasons. |
|
| |
The
event will include a 10 Km cross-country race around 16th century
Spanish colonial ruins.
|
It is
thought to be the only event of its kind in the world which includes
swimming to an island (Isla Grande). |
|
| |
|
The Portobelo Triathlon is
also famous for its |
|
| |
historic location: a stretch
of Caribbean coast dotted with a handful of ruins from the Spanish
colonial period.
The event promises to
be a popu lar attraction for tourists. The competition attracted over
5,000 tourist to the region last year. Visitors will have the opportunity
to view the swimming leg of the activity at Turicentro Montecarlo
(La Guayra), and the transition from cycling to running at Portobelo’s
Catholic church. The race will end at the town’s plaza, across
from the customs’ building.
Portobelo is located in
Costa Arriba -the upper coast of the province of Colón-one
of the most beautiful coastal areas in Panama. The town is 100 km
northeast of the country’s capital and the community of La Guayra
is approximately 45 minutes from Portobelo. To get there, visitors
need to get on the Trans-Isthmian Highway and drive to the town of
Sabanitas (66 km. north of Panama City) and make a right turn at the
town’s “Rey” supermarket. Portobelo is 30 minutes
away.
