Mariachi Vargas, Mexico's most prestigious band, takes to the stage
of Atlapa Convention Center on Thursday, August 25.
Considered
the "Best Mariachi in the World", Mariachi Vargas is a 108-year-old
institution. It was founded by Don Gaspar Vargas in 1897 in the small
city of Tecalitlán in a time when new techniques (the use of
trompets and cornets) slowly entered into Mexico’s best-known
music genre.
The group
became a celebrity in the 1930’s, when it won a number of important
contests and was declared "The official band of Mexico City’s
Police Department" by president Lázaro Cárdenas.
The motion picture "Así es mi Tierra", released in
1937, was the first of the appro-ximately 200 films in which Mariachi
Vargas has appeared.
Many famous
pop-music singers have also recorded albums with Mariachi Vargas,
including Linda Ronstad, who released "Canciones de mi padre"
–a Spanish-language album released in 1987.
