Like any other immigrant
family, the Julio Yang clan, who hail from Taiwan, faced a number
of challenging situations trying to adapt to their new life on the
Isthmus. One of them was to make a living. They decided to exploit
their knowledge of Taiwanese vegetarian cuisine, with the flavors
of this far and distant land. Mr. Yang opened his first restaurant
in the city’s banking and hotel district followed by a second
branch at El Dorado.
I went twice for lunch
La Casa Vegetariana’s branch in El Dorado and noticed that
not a few foreign tourists do the same on a regular basis, perhaps
to savor the ‘exotic’ flavor of a yucca or plantain
‘steak’ accompanied with algae salad, gluten and a cool
glass of home-made, pineapple juice...or perhaps a mushroom hamburger
and a side dish of yucca and vegetagle balls covered with sweet-and-sour
sauce. The menu goes on an on, encompassing over 30 dishes.
