Alexandre Pires:
a Brazilian soul in Panama

Brazilian romantic singer, Alexandre Pires, who became famous in Latin America with the group Só pra contrariar in the 1990s, will offer the concert entitled "Alma Brasilera" (Brazilian Soul) on Thursday, April 28 at Atlapa Convention Center.

Born on January 8, 1976, Pires has music flowing through his veins. He is the second son of João Pires and María Abadía, both of whom were very well-known Brazilian musicians. Alexandre, who started his career at age 13, became an instant success with the Samba hit, "Só pra contrariar", which later became the name of his group, Fundo de Quintal. Alexandre Pires has sold over 10 million albums around the world.

A classical extravaganza: April 29

The Orchestra comprises young musicians ages 15-24.

The Isthmian Youth Symphony Orchestra will offer a special recital on Friday, April 29 at the main auditorium of the Ascanio Arosemena Training Center (former Balboa High School) at 8:00 p.m. The performance will feature a variety of tunes and style, ranging from baroque and classical to marches and Panamanian orchestral melodies.

Established in 1999, the Isthmian Youth Symphony Orchestra comprises approximately 40 musicians ages 15-24.

Tickets cost $5.00 and are for sale at the Argosy Bookstore, located on Vía Argentina (tel.: 223-5344) or at the box office the night of the event.

 
 
 

Ballet Extravaganza

Visitors are invited to "Encuentros", a ballet extravaganza featuring the Nacional Ballet of Panama organized to celebrate International Dance Day (April 29). The event will take place at the National Theater, in the city’s Old Quarter. Proceeds from the event will be devoted to the reconstruction of Panama’s National Dance School.

Tickets cost $20.00, $15.00, $10.00 and $5.00, for sale at Felipe Motta’s Wine Store (tel.), and at Dance Plus Academy.

 
 
 

Art exhibit: Horses in history


Fine arts aficionados, especially those who love horses, are invited to the exhibit entitled "El caballo, su imagen plástica a través de la historia" (horses seen through the history of art), the recent works of Panamanian painter Benjamín Cruz, at “It’s Art Gallery”, in Marbella.

The exhibit encompasses twelve impressionist paintings depicting equines and their relationship with man in work and leisure; in war and peace. The works will be on display until April 30. For more information, call: 602-2177
