An "off-the-beaten-path"
destination visiors can stop by this dry season is Sarigua National
Park, a rare tropical desert located in the district of Parita, province
of Herrera.
Encompassing
approximately 8,000 hectares, this park is the dryest part of the
Republic. Although many call it a desert, it was actually an ancient
sea marsh, dried due to the effects of El Niño and thousands
of years of deforestation.
Sarigua
is a three-hour-drive from Panama City. To get there, get on the Pan
American Highway and drive west (230 km) to the town of Divisa, where
drivers should turn left. A few kilometers later, visitors will need
to detour where the sign indicates.
