Meet Mr. Ríos and his "Jurassic Park"

Mr. founded his little zoo three years ago.

Mr. Julio Ríos, a native of the city of Chitré, the provincial capital of Herrera, spent most of his life working on roads, highways and trails and numerous other public works that now constitute most of the country’s tourist infrastructure. Mr. Ríos enjoyed his work enormously especially since it provided him direct access to his main passion: Panama’s rich fauna.

Three years ago, Mr. Ríos established Eco-Aventuras Ríos, on a verdant family plot in the outskirts of Chitré. Rustic, this exotic three-hectare park and zoo resembles something taken out of a Jurassic Park film, (without the dinosaurs). Hawks, coyotes, pheasants, turtles, ostriches and white-tail deer are some of the species that inhabit the park, along with alligators, boa constrictors, iguanas, monkeys…the list goes on.

Some of the animals were donated by local residents, while others came to the park from places as far away as China. Mr. Ríos’ little zoo has become a big attraction in the area, and often receives bus-loads of school children from nearby towns and provinces, and occasionaly one or two foreign tourists as well.

A very tall friend.

An empirical animal expert, Mr. Ríos spends a large part of his time reading and traveling, seeking new ideas for his park. Children will be delighted with a number of special games around the facility, one of which is a junior Canopy Adventure –a sys-tem of ropes and pulleys where youngsters can play Tarzan (they even fly over the monkeys).

Eco-Aventuras Los Ríos also has a small restaurant where visitors can enjoy patacón relleno (a basket made with fried, green plantains, stuffed with meat or seafood) as well as game specialities. During the dry season (January-April) Mr. Ríos also offers boat tours on the adjacent La Villa river –an eco-tourist delight.

The city of Chitré is a three-and-a-half to four-hour drive from Panama City. The city boast good lodging facilities and is linked to the capital by an excellent bus system (departing from Albrook’s Gran Terminal) and daily scheduled flights departing from Marcos A. Gelabert Airport (also in Albrook). For more information, call: 996-0536/ 996-3064.

The colors of nature.

Mr. Ríos and a tall, feathered friend.
