Cerrito Tropical

Dutch/Canadian couple opens hotel on the “Island of Flowers”

Cynthia & Hiddo Muler

A new lodging facility called Cerrito Tropical has opened on the Island of Taboga. The boutique hotel, as its name suggests in Spanish, is on the slope of the island's verdant hill, offering superb views of the bay and its surrounding islands.

Designed for those seeking to relax and enjoy the pleasures of nature, Cerrito Tropical offers five spacious apartments with three, two and one bedrooms, the names of which refer to the island's greeness: Palma Suites, Mango Suites, Canopy Garden View, Jasmine Garden View and Little Mangos.

Cerrito Tropical offers five different tours, ranging from an hour-long historic walkabout through Taboga's 500-year-old village, to birdwatching excursions and fishing trips by day or night.

The hotel is the creation of Cynthia and Hiddo Muler, who came to Panama after spending part of their lives in Japan. Cynthia is Canadian and Hiddo was born in the Dutch Caribbean.

Located 12 nautical miles southeast of Panama City, Taboga Island is an easily accesible retreat for city dwellers. Also known as the "Island of Flowers", Taboga is an important historical element, not only for Panama, but for South America as well, as it was the point of departure from which Spanish conquistadors first sailed to the Inca kingdoms of Peru. French painter Paul Gaugin lived briefly on the island while recuperating from a tropical disease he contracted as a laborer during the ill-fated French canal project.

A daily service of ferries links Taboga to Panama City departing from the Amador Causeway.
