The place to be in July

Señorita María Victoria Barrios Cedeño, who will preside over the pollera festival in July.

With your cultural appetite sharpened by the upcoming 1000 Pollera Parade in Panama City, it´s time to plan a trip further affield to celebrate a the Pollera in its true home, the interior.

The National Festival of the Pollera will be celebrated in Las Tablas, July 13-22 and playing a starring role will be Señorita Victoria Barrios Cedeño who has been elected Festival Queen.

The celebration starts Friday July 13 with a folclórico parade through the a principle streets of the town. Panama City’s Market:

An old tradition comes back to life

Every Central American capital has its market –a colorful location where humble vendors from the countryside offer fresh produce at very low prices and where visitors can feel the warmth of traditional Latin culture as they purchase colorful souvenirs.

Established in 1913, Panama City’s Mercado Público was located in the area known as the Terraplén, in San Felipe, next to a pier on which farmers from all parts of the country disembarked everything from livestock to fresh produce and coal.

Due to urban decay and the advent of modern supermarkets after the second half of the 20th century, the tradition of going to the market at dawn every Sunday became passé in Panama.

Long gone are the days of the old market. It was torn down earlier this year, and has been converted into a large parking lot. The institution, however, lives on, at what used to be the customs building of the old Panama Railroad. The market is now called Mercado San Felipe Neri, honoring the patron saint of the historic neighborhood.

In the old days, the pungent odor of fresh fish and produce filled the air. The scenario is totally different at the new market, thanks to modern cold rooms, and state-of-the-art waste disposal systems –all of this in a neat, in-door setting equipped with fixtures for the handicapped. The total investment amounts to US$2.5 million.

The market also features a branch of Banco Nacional de Panamá, 24-hour security, small restaurants and 24-hour security.

Winnie-the-pooh and friends at Figali Convention Center

The original Winnie-the-pooh story was writen in 1926.

When British author and playwright A.A. Milnes wrote Winnie-the-pooh back in the 1920's, he probably didn't imagine that children in the distant, tropical country of Panama would be forming long lines to see a show based on his masterpiece.

The truth is that it is not just one show, but actually two shows a day, with a third one on weekends, between May 8-13 at Figali Convention Center, in Amador.

The plot of the show will center around Winnie's birthday, organized by all his friends (Piglet, Tigger, Igor and Rabbit,) who undergo a series of difficulties to plan a surprise party for him in the "Forest of the 100 Acres." Winnie got his name from a bear in London Zoo, where A.A. Milne used to take his son, Christopher Robin, on weekends. The bear had previously been the mascot of the Royal Winnipeg Regiment (Canada) during W.W. I

The event's organizers, Feld Entertainment, have promised children and their parents a top-quality show, featuring top-rated choreograhpy, fireworks and a colorful setting.

The story will be narrated by "Traice," a professional story teller of Disney Live!

The mayoralty of Panama City, one of the sponsors of the event, has invited children of limited resources to the shows, with the issue of free tickets for them.

Regular tickets are for sale at the Ticket Center desk, located at the Audiofoto store of Multiplaza Pacific Mall.

International Book Fair: May 15-20

The organizers of Panama's fourth International Book Fair are expecting an attendance of 100,000 visitors between May 15-20 at Atlapa Convention Center.

Taking place every two years, the fair is a long-awaited event for thousands of middle-class Panamanian families seeking for new educational tools for their children. The fair, however, is not only about text books. It is a cultural fiesta in which visitors and expats are welcomed, not only due to the large number of English-language titles available, but also to the large variety of music and theater performances planned. One of the entertainment highlights of the fair will be the performance of Flamenco singer Diego "El Cigala."

This year's "guest country" is Spain, which will be represented by a team of award winning-authors, publishers and journalists, including Lucía Etchevarría (winner of the Planeta Award,) Javier Reverte, Clara Sánchez, Albert Figueras, José del Val, and movie producer Carmen Labrador. Novelists, poets and journalists from Venezuela, Mexico, Colombia, El Salvador and Costa Rica will offer a series of lectures and conferences on the latest literary trends in the region.

The 2007 International Book Fair will be, according to organizers, 40% larger than the previous version of the event, as it will feature 233 stands. Back in 2005, over 12,000 books were sold, representing 1.1 million dollars in sales.
