Looney Tunes comes to town


The show is a funny adaptation on ice of the Jules Verne’s masterprice.

On June, the amusing characters of Warner Brother's Looney Tunes, will entertain, both kids and grownups, with the presentation of the show "Looney Tunes On Ice: Around the world in 80 minutes".

The event, presented by Showpro from June 5 - 10 (Monday - Thursday at 7:00 p.m. Weekends at 11:00 a.m., 3:00 p.m., and 7:00 p.m.) in the Figali Convention Center, will offer a funny adaptation on ice of the masterpiece of Jules Verne.

Joined by Bugs Bunny, Tweety, Daffy Duck and Silvester, the main characters Phileas Fogg and Passepartout, will travel the five continents in record time with lots of adventures on the way.

Tickets for the event are already on sale in the Video Avenue stores. Prices vary from $9 - $39.

Las Tablas Pollera festival


Señorita María Victoria Barrios Cedeño.
The National Festival of the Pollera will be celebrated in Las Tablas, July 13-22 and playing a starring role will be Señorita Victoria Barrios Cedeño who has been elected Festival Queen.

The celebration starts Friday July 13 with a parade through the a principal streets of the town. During the month the festival will be enlivened with a national violin contest and a Camisilla (shirt) and sombrero contest. The sombrero event will be in two categories, luxury (white or colored) and regular (rush). A good time to chose a new piece of headgear.

The festival ends on July 22.

 
 
 

Expat meetings in Coronado

Expats West meets on the 4th Wednesday of each month at El Rincón del Chef, in Coronado. The group has grown from less than 40 at the first social, to more than 150.

Cuban Salsa for Father's Day

If you are into salsa music, and enjoy good old Cuban dance rythms like rumba, chachachá, danzón, bolero, son or charanga, you might want to attend to the Sensación Orchestra concert on Friday, June 15.

The show, presented to celebrate Father's Day, will be held at 8:00 p.m. at the Palacio Dorado Restaurant, located in Plaza Mirage on Tumba Muerto Ave.

The Cuban Orchestra, one of Latin America's top groups with a great international reputation, will play the best of its repertoire from the 50's and 60's. They look forward to getting the audience dancing or singing their famous songs "La Macorina" and "La Hija de Juan Simón".

The Sensation Orchestra, will be accompanied by the powerful voice of Cuban singer Vannia Borges.

Award winning String Quartet at National Theater

The Pacifica String Quartet will perform next Thursday, June 7 at 8:00 p.m. at the National Theater.

The quartet composed of Simin Ganatra (violin), Masumi Per Rostad (viola), Sibbi Bernhardsson (violin) and Brandon Vamos (cello), will perform music by Mendelssohn, Janacek and Smetana.

Earlier, at 2:00 p.m., the group will offer a workshop at the theater for string instruments open to anyone interested.

Recognized for its performance style, and daring repertory choices, the Pacifica Quartet has carved out a compelling musical path.

Since the ensemble first came together in 1994, it quickly swept top prizes in several leading international competitions, including the 1998 Naumburg Chamber Music Competition.

In 2002 the Pacifica was honored with the Chamber Music America Award.

In 2006 they received a prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, only the second chamber music ensemble to be selected.

Prolific in the recording studio, the Pacifica Quartet recently released "Declarations: Music Between the Wars" showcasing music composed by Leos Janacek, Paul Hindemith, and America’s Ruth Crawford Seeger during the turbulent 1920s and 1930s.

The Quartet’s earlier recordings of the complete string quartets of Felix Mendelssohn have been praised by critics in the US and abroad.

At Presidente Remón Racetrack

The 79th “Presidente”


Roberto "Mano de Piedra" Durán will present the trophy to the winner.

Panama's most prestigious horse race, the "President of the Republic Classic", with a $60,000 prize, will run at the Presidente Remón Stadium next Sunday, June 3.

The 79th running will be backed by a full card of races, and supporting ceremonies with all the pomp and circumstance you expect to find at the "sport of kings".

Among the horses competing, will be last year's winner from the U.S., "Excellent Shine", ridden by Jairo Rendón.

The race is not only the top of the racing calendar, but also the longest race of the year, 2,600 meters.

Former Panamanian boxing champion Roberto "Mano de Piedra" Durán will present the trophy to the winner.

The events kick off at 1:00 p.m.

The Presidente Remón track is located in Vía José Agustín Arango, in Juan Díaz.

A sporting weekend for all tastes

A busy sporting weekend kicks off on Friday, June 1, with the opening of the Panama Attractive Tennis Cup 2007 at the clay courts in Curundu.

All the major tennis clubs of Panama will be supporting the event which will last through June 15.

Famous London nightclub gives electronic concert

Electronic music lovers will party "the London way" on Saturday, June 2 at the international concert "Ministry of Sound" at the Multisports Football court in Multiplaza Mall.

The event presented by Espectáculos y Promociones Artísticas will have a similar environment to the European electronic festivals, a state of the art light system, and the performance of famous Dj's: Marc Hughes from London, Granvil Kincaid from the US, Masal Sheik from Brazil and Panamanian Edward Allen.

Ministry of Sound is a famous London electronic nightclub.

Located in Elephant and Castle in Southwark, South London, Ministry of Sound was one of the key locations in the development of international house music.

The tickets for the event are on sale at Blockbuster stores. Prices vary from $15 (club area) to $25 (VIP with capacity for 200 persons) and $100 (ultra VIP with capacity for 100 persons at tables of 10).

Stephen Covey talks leadership

Stephen Covey, considered one of the 25 most influential people in the United States, will be in Panama on June 28 and 29 to give conferences about leadership.

Covey, author of the bestseller "The seven habits of the highly effective people", will offer three conferences: One about leadership, a conference for families, which seeks to reinforce family values, and a "Prosperity Forum" meant to generate a more solid society.

Navy League Second Tuesday Dinner with: Capitán Orlando Allard

Location: Former Canal Zone

The Navy League has a special evening in store. First, there will be an exclusive tour of the UMIP's Panamax Engineering Room Simulator in the former Canal Zone printing plant. This is where cadets learn about engine room operations and go through training UMIP engine simulator drills to become engineering officers on Panamax ships.

After the tour, dinner will be served in another of the facility's large rooms where the school's chefs will prepare a dinner for all. Captain Orlando Allard will give his presentation after dinner.

Fortuna the Brazilian singer, of Jewish origin, will be performing at the National Theater in Panama on Tuesday June 5, as part of her international tour.

She will be singing in Ladino, a judeo-hispanic dialect.
