Cuban Salsa for Father's Day

If you are into salsa music, and enjoy good old Cuban dance rythms like rumba, chachachá, danzón, bolero, son or charanga, you might want to attend to the Sensación Orchestra concert on Friday, June 15.

The show, presented to celebrate Father's Day, will be held at 8:00 p.m. at the Palacio Dorado Restaurant, located in Plaza Mirage on Tumba Muerto Ave.

The Cuban Orchestra, one of Latin America's top groups with a great international reputation, will play the best of its repertoire from the 50's and 60's. They look forward to getting the audience dancing or singing their famous songs "La Macorina" and "La Hija de Juan Simón".

The Sensation Orchestra, will be accompanied by the powerful voice of Cuban singer Vannia Borges.

Las Tablas Festival


Señorita María Victoria Barrios Cedeño.
The National Festival of the Pollera will be celebrated in Las Tablas, July 13-22 and playing a starring role will be Señorita Victoria Barrios Cedeño who has been elected Festival Queen.

The celebration starts Friday July 13 with a parade through the a principal streets of the town. During the month the festival will be enlivened with a national violin contest and a Camisilla (shirt) and sombrero contest. The sombrero event will be in two categories, luxury (white or colored) and regular (rush). A good time to chose a new piece of headgear.

 
 
 

Stephen Covey talks about leadership

Stephen Covey, considered one of the 25 most influential people in the United States, will be in Panama on June 28 and 29 to give conferences about leadership.

Covey, author of the bestseller "The seven habits of the highly effective people", will offer three conferences: One about leadership, a conference for families, which seeks to reinforce family values, and a "Prosperity Forum" meant to generate a more solid society.

First annual Boca Chica fishing tournament

The First Annual Boca Chica Fishing Tournament, June 2 and 3, benefiting the Boca Chica School was a big success.

The tournament founder, Dr. Donna Skinner (former owner of private schools in the US) decided to launch an annual tournament, as a fundraiser, to assist in her mission of improving the quality of the education and health of the children in Boca Chica. This will be an annual event. Dr. Skinner told "The Visitor": "I am sure this will become a big event, with bigger prizes and more participants, and in turn will help to make a difference in the lives of the children of Boca Chica".

The event had 53 fishermen, fishing offshore and/or inshore. Prizes include a 15 hp Yamaha engine, marine radio, GPS, 4 hp Yamaha, Yamaha generator, 2 nights at a luxury hotel, rods and reels, boat speakers, sun glasses, tackle boxes, and life jackets. The weigh-in and prize ceremony was at Gone Fishing Panama Resort, in Boca Chica.

The winning inshore boat was "Blue Sky" from Pedregal, with Captain Luis Muñoz, catching a 25-pound pargo.

The offshore winner was "Good Fellas", from Boca Chica, with Captain Bruce Edwards, catching a 24-pound tuna.

 
 
 

Night of Guitars is back

The renowned duo of international guitarists formed by Arturo Villarreal and Luis Bonilla are back in Panama to present their famous show "Noche de Guitarras".

The event will take place on June 14 at the bar El Callejón located in Ill Bocallino restaurant.

The musicians will delight the audience with their ample repertoire that includes jazz, salsa, and flamenco.

The cost is $5.00.

Triathlon Sprint at the Bridge of the Americas

The Bridge of the Americas Triathlon Sprint will have male and female competitors in the open category: for youngsters over 15 years old. In the Iron event 14 year old children will be able to participate in teams.

The transition part of the event will be at the fishermen's bridge, after the entrance of Far Fan.

From there the athletes will go into the sea to face a triangular circuit of 250 meters. The second event will be a 20 kilometers bike ride over the road towards the Playa Veracruz. The third test is the 5 kilometers race, where the participants will run towards the starting point.

Gil Brown, who is in charge of the logistics of the event, said that there will be five policemen situated at strategic points and one motorcycle will accompany the competitors.

In the water, there will be lifeguards in kayaks and jet skis.

Rhythms of the world in the Casco Viejo


Cathedral Plaza is one of the settings for the music festival.

El Casco Viejo will echo with rhythms of jazz, classical music, world, cantadera, and salsa on Saturday June 23, when 20 concerts take place, in five different locations. The event has been organized by Oficina del Casco Antiguo, the Alliance Francaise and the Embassy of France. Entrance is free and the festival starts at 3:00 p.m. There will be free transport from Amador to Casco Viejo with secure parking from 2:30 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.

Argentinian troubador at the National Theater


Facundo Cabral

Argentinian singer Facundo Cabral, known for his songs loaded with positive messages, will give a concert today Friday, June 15 at 8:30 p.m. at the National Theater.

Cabral, who started his career in the sixties, will perform along with Panamanian composers Priscila Moreno, Gretell Garibaldi, Juan Sin Tierra and Carlos Iván Zúñiga III.

Proceeds of the concert will benefit La Casita de Mausi.

Tickets are on sale at Librería Argosy in Vía Argentina, and at the theater for $60, $50, $40 and $20.
