Exhibition at Arteconsult

Panamanian painter shows her landscapes of another world

"Obra reciente", the new exhibition of the painter Teresa Icaza will run for the next three weeks at Arteconsult Alemán y Grimberg gallery. The exhibit that has 24 paintings of "imaginary" landscapes, demonstrates a great ability in handling color evoking sunny summer afternoon.

The Panamanian artist, who started painting in 1968, uses as her subjects day-to-day images, that later on she translates in an abstract form, creating a new universe where everything is possible. The exhibition has unity, because the tree theme persists as well as the use of variations of the same color.

Imaginary landscapes evoke sunny summer afternoons.

Icaza has shown her paintings in the United States, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Spain, Mexico and Panama. She has also participated in collectives exhibits in Europe, Central America, the Caribbean and South America.

From left to right: Amalia Tapia, Sebastian Paniza,
Irene González.

The technique used by Icaza is mixed because she likes to create new textures. First she works on a simple sketch to create over it, more complicated drawings using different types of paper. Later on, she uses pastel pencils and oil bars. The result is an abstract landscape that invites the observer to lose himself in that imaginary world.

From left to right: Diana Moreinis Grimberg, Jorge Conte,
Gabriela Batista.

"Obra reciente" will be shown until the mid September at the Arteconsult Alemán and Grimberg, located in Calle 50 between Calles 72 and 73, San Francisco, Panama. For more information call 302-2646/2647.

Fiesta Alrededor del Mundo

Popular fair offers food & products from 38 countries

FORTY SIX YEARS AGO, a group of women, foreigners, diplomats´ wives and some Panamanians decided to get together and create a group called:"Caravana de Asistencia Social" with the aim of helping the needy people of Panama.

María Inés de Shipani, wife of the
Uruguayan Ambassador and
president of the “caravana” says
15 charities will benefit.

"Caravana de Asistencia Social" has only one event each year, "Fiesta Alrededor del Mundo", to cover the expenses of its "help the poor program". Countries which take part offer food, products and handicrafts which they sell in stalls, at very competitive prices.

The "Caravana" president and wife of the Uruguayan ambassador, María Inés de Schipani, said that this year 38 countries will take part in the event and 15 charities, among them Hogares Crea and Aldeas S.O.S: will benefit from the money raised.

Mrs. Schipani pointed out that "Fiesta Alrededor del Mundo", is a very interesting festival, because it attracts a wide variety of people all interested in experiencing other cultures, without leaving Panama.

Last year around 10,000 people went to the event and although the 2007 "fiesta" will take place on a Thursday, "Caravana" expects that number to increase.

In addition to selling their products, some nations will present folkloric dances and the children from the Special Olympics will perform in a dance exhibition.

"La Fiesta Alrededor del Mundo" will take place on September 6, at the Atlapa Convention Center, from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tickets: $3.00.

Andy Irvine the real sound of Ireland

The sounds of Irvine are
unforgettable.

The Irish musician, singer and composer, Andy Irvine, who has been acclaimed by international critics as the archetypical troubadour, will perform September 1 at the Anita Villalaz Theater.

Irvine has maintained his style during his 40 years career and has had successes with Irish groups such as Sweeney´s Men, Planxty and Patrick Street. During his two years with Sweeney´s Men, the band ignited a great interest for the traditional Irish music which persists to this day.

In 1976, Irvine recorded with Paul Brady the album “Andy Irvine & John Brady. In the 80s he recorded his first solo album “Rainy Sundays... Windy Dreams”, which was followed by “Parallel Lines”, with the great Scottish troubadour, Dick Gaughan.

Andy has toured Bulgaria, Romania, Yugoslavia, Australia and Costa Rica. Although he was at one point or another part of the best Irish groups, he decided to pursue his solo career as an artist with style who tells tales and makes music.

The sound of Irvine is a mix of Irish, Celt, American and Balkan music and that make his concerts very special.

The event will start at 8:00 p.m. and the entrance costs $20.00.
