Big fair at Atlapa

Expo Habitat reflects boom in construction projects

The construction boom of the last few years will be reflected at Capac Expo Habitat 2007, the international fair of construction and housing from September 26 to 30 at the Atlapa Convention Center.

Capac Expo Hábitat started in 1980 as an event organized by builders for builders and providers of goods and services, but in the last ten years it has expanded into a major event for those in the construction industry and the public as well. You can shop for houses, mortgages, furniture and heavy machinery among other things. This event is considered one of the most important in Latin American and the Caribbean.

The fair will include speeches, conferences and products demonstrations. A business area will be available to help those companies which would like to make commercial contacts within the event.

It is estimated that around 350 exhibitors will participate, including manufacturers, distributors, machinery representatives and distributors of equipment and building systems, to mention a few. The organizers expect that more than 35,000 people will come to the fair, which could generate in commercial transactions a figure close to $300 million.

A great number of real estate promoters and banks will offer different types of properties and information about the best mortgages at the best interest rates.

For more information about Capac Expo Hábitat call: 265-2500.

Enanitos Verdes.

TWO GIANTS of Latin American rock and roll will perform in Panama on October 2 at the "Islas de Atlapa".

They are the famous Argentinian group "Enanitos Verdes" (Little Green Dwarfs) and the popular Mexican band, "Moenia".

"Enanitos Verdes", the band formed by Marciano Cantero (bass, keyboard and vocal), Felipe Staiti (guitar) and Daniel Piccolo (drums) got together in November 1979 and since then, its fame has extended to Spain, United States and all over Latin America. Their record "En Vivo" sold more than 80,000 copies in Mexico alone and they have released more 14 albums in their career.

Among the most popular singles of the "Enanitos Verdes" are: "Aún sigo cantando", "Tus Viejas Cartas" and "Tu cárcel", which made it to the American hit parade. The band was the first Argentinian group to be offered a recording contract by Polygram, an American record company.

Exhibition “Icons and Iconographics”
by Desiderio Sánchez

Influence of a boyhood in Bocas

By: Marijulia Pujol Lloyd

STRANGE FIGURES that make us think about cultures from the past, faces full of nostalgia and melancholy, mix with an explosion of colors which assault the eyes in what becomes a memorable experience. This is what the veteran painter Desiderio Sánchez offers us in his exhibition: “Icons and Iconographies”, at the Banco Nacional, on Vía España until September 30.

Sánchez has been dedicated to his art for more than 50 years and his work has been exhibited in Brazil, Spain, England and other parts of the world. His painting, "Acólitos de Cusapín" is part of the Vatican permanent collection in Rome and he is considered one of the most important Panamanian painters.

Desiderio Sánchez studied painting in Guatemala, Costa Rica, Mexico and Spain. His work has received numerous distinctions and prizes in international and biennial competitions, in which he represented Panama.

Talking about the state of the arts in Panama, Sánchez told the Visitor: "our schools should pay more attention to the study of the fine arts, because a man can demonstrate his education not only by being an efficient professional, but also when he can converse about art and literature, which after all, feed the soul".

He added that: "Young painters should experiment and carry on regardless of criticism, because this allows them to grow and will be reflected in their paintings giving them more depth and feeling."

His paintings are heavily influenced by his childhood in Bocas del Toro and that is why marine allegories are a constant in his compositions.

The exhibition Icons and Iconographies can be seen free of charge on the ground floor of the Banco Nacional, Via España, Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9:00 to 12:00 p.m.
