Cala Mia resort–a desert island destination with all the trimmings

If you are looking for a place that offers you beautiful beaches, an eco-friendly experience, you should try the boutique hotel/island eco-resort of Cala Mia. Located in one of the deserted islands which form part of the "Parque Marino de Chiriquí", it is only 45 minutes away from David, the capital of the province of Chiriquí.


Simple elegance.

This island resort is flanked by two beaches and offers safe swimming, kayaking and snorkeling. The electricity is produced by solar-power; its waste-waters are treated with a biological product, which turns it into reusable water. The vegetables are grown in Cala Mia own organic farm and they are the principal ingredients used by the Michelin-trained chef Joel Chartier.

The hotel is built on a peninsula covering five acres. It has eleven suites each with its own thatched roof rancho and prices oscillate between $140 and $180 plus tax, depending on the season. All the rooms are within ten meters from the Pacific Ocean or the beach bay side. It has a restaurant bar with "mirador", infinity pool and the yoga and massage-room is built on a separate island connected by a hanging-bridge. This spa offers Swedish massage and beauty treatments such as facials, manicures and pedicures.

The hotel´s location in the marine park is ideal for scuba diving, watching whales, dolphins and turtles.


Right on th beach.

Deep sea fishing trips go from $75 up to $800. Tuna and sail fish abound in this area. The hotel which also offers scuba diving, snorkeling, horse-back and mangrove tours as well as visits to other islands like "Los Ladrones" or "Las Secas".

To get to Cala Mia catch a plane from the Marcos Gelabert Airport in Albrook, Panama City to David for $75, from there a taxi ride to Boca Chica for $40 and finally take a boat to Cala Mia for $25. If you prefer, Cala Mia can arrange an airport pick-up from David´s airport for a one hour trip through estuaries, rivers, mangroves and sea to the resort for $200 for 4 people plus $15 for every additional person, inclusive of drinks and snacks.
