Big business at 2007 Motor Show

The 2007 Panama Motor show got underway on Friday, October 12, at the Atlapa Convention Center. It ends on Sunday, October 21, so there is still time to visit, choose, or only admire. Approximately 45 auto manufacturers will be represented.

The fact that in 2006 3,100 cars were sold in the months of October and November after the show is testament to its the effectiveness. Organizers are confident that figure will rise considerably this year. The show is open from 4:00p.m. to 10:00p.m. on weekdays and 2:00p.m. to 10:00p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

 
 
 

At Mateo Sariel Gallery

Alicia Viteri creates magical landscapes with her digital techniques

Alicia Viteri, the painter originally from Colombia is currently exhibiting a series of landscapes from her collection "Nuevos Paisajes" (New Landscapes), at the Mateo Sariel gallery.

The show has 15 paintings in acrylic over canvas, which measure from ten inches to 2.90 meters.

The painter who studied at the Art School of the University of Los Andes, in Bogota, for many years has battled allergies to paint which at one time threatened to finish her career, but thanks to computers and water based acrylic she has continued her work. Viteri now works with a Mac and paints using an electronic pencil.

She has shown her work in more than 30 exhibitions in Colombia, the United States, China, Germany and Japan. Her individual style has won her honor mentions in 1983 at the Graphic Arts Biennial in Puerto Rico and at Intergrafik 87 in Germany.

Mexican pop group RBD at Figali

RBD the popular Mexican pop group that gained popularity from Televisa's teenage-orientated soap "Rebelde", will perform in Panama on November 1, at the Figali Convention Center, as part of its "Tour Celestial 2007".

The Mexican band has achieved a great commercial success with cross-over appeal. They are very popular and have sold over 10 million albums worldwide in the last three years. RBD debuted in December 2004 with the album "Rebelde", released through EMI. The first three singles "Rebelde", "Solo Quédate En Silencio" and "Sálvame" were all number one hits in Mexico.

The group is a huge phenomenon all over Latin America and has performed in the world's biggest stadium, Maracana in Rio De Janeiro.

The Tour Celestial 2007 will begin at 7:00 p.m. Tickets costs start at $25 and are for sale at Ticket Center.

 
 
 

“The Hyptonist’s Passion”

"The Hypnotist's Passion" (La Pasión del Hipnotista) a Panamanian movie, which was released worldwide on January of this year, can be seen again from October 19 in local cinemas. The film won the prize for the "Best Screen Play" on the Internet site globalfilmcritics.com.

The movie, directed by M.J. Knight, is about a hypnotist who loses his daughter in an accident and decides to travel through time to bring her back. To achieve his aim he fights the dangerous side effects of time travel, the revenge of a drug dealer and time itself, because it is running out.

 
 
 

Alejandro Sanz

Spanish singer to give concert at Figali Center

The most commercially successful Spanish singer and songwriter, Alejandro Sanz will serenade the Panamanian public with his melodious voice and the compositions of his new album, "El Tren de los Momentos", on October 30 at the Figali Convention Center.

Sanz, who made his first single when he was 16 years old, has had a series of hits which includes "Y, Si fuera ella?, Cuando Nadie Me Ve and the Grammy Prize winner album of 2003, "No, Es Lo Mismo".

He has achieved international fame by recording with artists such as the Irish band "The Corrs" and the Colombian superstar, Shakira. The single they made together in 2005 "La Tortura", exposed Sanz to a bigger audience.

Graphic insight into Panama’s Afro Antillan culture

"An Afro-Antillean Sentiment: Images from a Panamanian Culture" an exhibition of photographs by Rose Marie Cromwell will be shown at the Diablo Rosso gallery in Panama City from October 24 to November 25.

Cromwell, a documentary photographer, spent last year in Panama as a United States Fulbright Grantee. She interview-ed and photographed Panamanians of Afro-Antillean descent living in Panama City, Colon and Bocas del Toro.

During the early 20th Century tens of thousands of workers emigrated from the Caribbean to build the Panama Canal. Most never returned to their homelands, but instead settled permanently in Panama. Du- ring the past 100 years members of this Panamanian community have preserved many of their Caribbean traditions.

Cromwell's portraits tell the stories and personal anecdotes of Afro-Antillean Panamanians, while exploring subjects such as memory, nostalgia, cultural identity and pride.

At Atlapa Convention Center

Young scientists to exhibit inventions at “Ingenuity Fair”

Future Panamanian scientists will exhibit their inventions at the National Youth Ingenuity Fair, which will take place from October 24 to 26 at Atlapa Convention Center.

Around 78 schools from different parts of the country will participate in this event which aims to stimulate the interest of students for investigation and innovation through the presentation of scientific projects.

The fair is organized by the SENACYT together with the Ministry of Education, to popularize science and technology in Panama and tries to detect those youngsters with talent who may need support to exploit their full potential.

The entrance is free. The fair will be inaugurated on October 24 at 10:00 a.m. On October 25 and 26 it will open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

 
 
 

Chicago

Famous musical to be staged at Teatro en Circulo

One of the most remarkable musical plays of all times, Chicago, which tells the story of the trials of two murderesses in the 20s, will be presented in Panama by the "Teatro en Círculo" from October 9 to 31. It is directed by the American director, Bruce Quinn.

Roxie Hart, interpreted by Vicky Greco, is an apparently innocent actress whose dream is to follow in the footsteps of the vaudeville artist, Velma Kelly, played by Erika Baum and Juliette Roy. Due to unforeseeable circumstances both women landed in jail accused of murder.

A cast of 22 plus eight musicians, will interpret the story of ambition and betrayal. Quinn is accompanied in this project by the producers Nicky de Roy and Diana Abouganem. Dino Nugent is the musical director, while Mélida Samaniego and Ricardo Moreno are in charge of the choreography.

A Charity Gala Evening in aid of the Fatima Parish, in the Casco Viejo, will be held at the Sheraton Hotel on October 27. This movie tries to make people think about immigration and its influence on Latin Americans’ life, using the story of an English teacher who wants to emigrate to U.S.A. at all cost, even committing a crime.

Saxophonist Kenny G. "in the mood for love" at upcoming concert

The U.S. saxophonist Kenny G, one of the musician most representatives of light jazz, will perform in Panama on October 25 to promote his new album, "I´m in the mood for love...the most romantic melodies of all time".

Kenneth Gorelick, the complete name of the musician, plays the soprano saxophone as his principal instrument, but he also uses variants of it, such as tenor and alto, as well as the flute.

Kenny G´s new material is a compendium of 13 songs from other artist such as James Blunt, Alicia Keys, and the Beatles. All these melodies will integrate part of the repertoire of the concert.

"Y Ahora, Cómo la Saco?: A girl gets pregnant

The Aba Theater will be presenting the funny comedy,"Y Ahora, Cómo la Saco? (Una Metida de Pata) from October 18 to November 25 at 8:00 p.m.

This hilarious comedy tells the story of a girl who gets pregnant and her parents have to hire a man to marry her. An insurance salesman is mistaken for the prospective groom. The groom is confused with a thief, who is an accomplice of the maid. The father is grumpy, the mother does not know what is going on, the salesman is a fool, the girl is a liar and the maid is a mischievous thief. Comic situations with a happy ending for the whole family.

“Cruz del Sur” race in Aguadulce

The 12th "Cruz del Sur Duwest" Race will take place on October 21 in Aguadulce. The principal race will be run over eight kilometers and will start at 8:00 a.m. The athletes will have the opportunity of winning $1000 in prizes.

The winners of the general race, male and female will receive $100 each. There will also be prizes for the open master and grand master categories. Another race will be over three kilometers.

The route will pass through the Aguadulce streets and among the participants will be Irving Canto, Javier Solís, Savino Chavarría and Guillermo Ramírez to mention a few. The Argentinian Emmanuel Lemma, who came in fourth place at the Las Bovedas race, is one of the favorites. "La Cruz del Sur Duwest" race was won in 2006 and 2005 by Rafael Vega of Chiriquí.

The registration will cost $2.00 for adults and $1.00 for children and includes hydration and breakfast. Three buses will set at 4:00 a.m. from the Shell petrol station, at La Cresta in Panama City, for those people who wish to participate or see the race. The round trip will cost $5.00.

Pre-Olympic Soccer Play off in November at Rod Carew Stadium

The Rod Carew stadium will be the scene of the eliminatory pre-Olympic triangular between the national teams of the Sub 23 category which are: Panama, El Salvador and Honduras. The matches will determine which of these countries will be in the Hershey’s Pre-Olympic final octagonal in the United States.

The first game will be between Panama and El Salvador on November 7 at night. On November 9, El Salvador will face Honduras. The mini tournament will be closed with the game between Panama and Honduras. The team with more points will represent the region in the Olympic Games in Beijing.

The team that comes second will be able to participate in the other eliminatory group formed by Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Guatemala.

Tennis tourney expected to draw 250 players

The II Fila Tennis Cup, which started yesterday, Thursday October 18 will draw 250 players who will compete in this 15-days tournament, which will take place in the Fred Maduro High Performance Center of Curundú.

The open tournament, which has the support of the Panamanian Tennis Federation and is sponsored by the brand Fila, will be in aid of Fundacáncer and Panamanian champions Matías González, Miguel Brostella, Luis García and Arnulfo Cortney will participate.

 
 
 

Halloween concert at Balboa Theater

A group of national artists headed by the singer and Tourism Minister, Rubén Blades will pay homage to the late composer and painter Joaquín "Yin" Carrizo. The event will take place on October 31, at the Balboa Theater, at 8:00 p.m. and it will be in aid of Radio Hogar.

The concert will be divided in two parts and will have a touch of humor with the show "Las Vecinas". The event has the participation of Osvaldo Ayala, Alejandro Lagrotta, Lisette Condasín, Iván Barrios, Ingrid de Icaza and Juliette Roy among others.

At the entrance of the theater, there will be an exhibition of Carrizo´s paintings. Tickets are for sale at Blockbuster.

 
 
 

European Film Festival at the Alhambra movie theater

The Alhambra Movie Theater on Vía España, in conjuction with various foreign embassies will present a European Film Festival from October 19 - Nov 17 films will be shown from such countries as Germany, Belgium, Spain, Finland, France, Italy, Great Britain and Sweden.
