¡Remen, remen! Los competidores de la carrera
de cayucos cruzan el istmo.
Desde un mar hasta el otro, remando en su cayuco!!! Estamos en temporada
de verano y vacaciones en Panamá. El 14 de marzo dará
inicio la carrera de cayucos sobre el Canal de Panamá. Es una
fuerte prueba de salud, resistencia, espíritu competitivo y conciencia
medioambiental.
La carrera se divide en tres: desde Cristobál hasta Gatún
y en el día siguiente desde Gatún hasta Gamboa y finalmente
desde Gamboa hasta Balboa.

Hay botes “trofeo” para los jóvenes de 14 a 17
años y para los mayores, botes “parche” para que
podamos decir que “sí, yo si remé de un mar hasta
el otro!” Es un logro maravilloso, sin importar la edad.
La ruta tiene 51 millas de largo, y por lo tanto el entrenamiento
duro empieza desde noviembre cuando sale el sol, y hasta que se oculte,
con los músculos flexionados, agachados y remando por horas para
ser los mejores de la competencia.

Fue en 1954 cuando Frank Townsend, un
empleado de el Canal, alentó a un grupo de exploradores
de “Boy Scouts of America” a aprender la cultura indígena
y remar en el Río Chagres. Iniciar la Carrera de los Cayucos
es el segundo logro grande de los Boy Scouts of America en Panamá,
el primero ha sido la apertura de“Cruces Trail.”

Un cayuco es el tronco ahuecado de un árbol que con el tiempo
se ha convertido en una nave sofisticada, moderna y rápida. En
los principios de la competencia, los equipos demoraron 11 horas para
cruzar las 51 millas. Hoy en día, lo hacen en apenas cinco horas.
Un buque que transita el Canal toma un promedio de 12 horas, asi que
nuestros equipos tienen una mejora del 41.66% contra el trafico regular
del Canal de Panama.
Hoy, el cayuco es una cáscara refinada del tronco de un árbol
de unos 15 a 30 pies, cuyo freeboard no es de más de dos pulgadas
y carga equipos de cuatro para la cruel misión de ser los primeros
en llegar.
Hay cuatro retos, el “Amador Causeway Challenge”, la “Copa
Atlantica”, la“Gamboa Regatta” y el “Chagres
Fun Day”.
La carrera ha crecido a nivel internacional y ha traído fuertes
patrocinadores como la Autoridad del Canal (que sin ellos, no habría
carrera), Nissan, The Gamboa Rain Forest y Seaboard. Muchos equipos
viajan desde el exterior para competir. |
Concierto Internacional Artistas del alrededor del mundo se unen
para un gran concierto en el Teatro Nacional llamado “Gala Lírica
- Concierto Internacional” en la Ciudad de Panamá el 15
de marzo a las 8:00 p.m. Thomas Poole, gran tenor de opera y concierto
estadounidense, hará su debut panameño ademas del barítono
de opera, el italiano Vincenzo Benestante. Angela Zhukova es una soprano
de Ukrania que se presenta y ademas de Róger Lacáyo de
Nicaragua, soprano panameño Fernando Bustos, and el pianista
Abdiel Godar de Panamá todos participarán en este gran
evento.
Esta noche de excelencia musical es producida por Bob Stiff y Victor
Velasquez y cuenta con la musica de Mozart, Bizet, Verdi, Donizetti,
Strauss, Puccini, Lehar, Delibes and Gounod. Bob Stiff es también
el director, y promete un formato diferente a otros conciertos tradicionales.
