Long weekend

Easter in Panama

Another long weekend is coming up in Panama during Holy Week, "Semana Santa", which is the Easter celebration in Latin America. Thursday, March 20 is a holiday for all government offices and some local businesses and Good Friday, March 21, is a national holiday.

Since 85% of the country is Roman Catholic, their celebrations are the most notable throughout the country. Each church will hold services throughout Holy Week which culminates on Easter Sunday on March 23. The celebrations are marked by traditional processions with vast numbers of participants.

Contact a local church if you wish to participate in services or find out when you could witness or participate in a procession.

The main phone number for the Catholic Church in Panama is 261-0002. Balboa Union Church near Panama City offers services in English. They will offer services on Good Friday on Easter Sunday but did not have times when The Visitor went to press. Contact them at 228-0012. Not all Panamanians choose to participate in the religious festivals, and use the long weekend to travel to the interior so make bookings in advance because hotels and resorts may be full.

Helping poverty

Latin America’s richest in Panama

Fifty of Latin America’s biggest tycoons arrived in Panama a few weeks back to discuss the region’s poverty and social turmoil.

The meeting, labeled "Business Encounter for Fathers & Sons," also touched on the subject of legacy and preparing future generations to partake in the economic empires they will inherit with experience and solidarity with both their peers and Latin America. It’s because of this that many of the businessmen who attended came with their families.

The yearly tradition began in 2003, with the first encounter taking place in Mexico on the initiative of Carlos Slim. Almost immediately, Julio Santo Domingo of Colombia and Gustavo Cisneros of Venezuela joined the organizing committee. In 2004 the meeting moved to the Dominican Republic, and in following years it was held in Sao Paolo, Brazil, Buenos Aires, Argentina and Chile in 2007. The goal is always the same: to create solutions for the region’s poverty by way of innovative business programs. But the meeting has no relation to investments and business opportunities in the host country.Colombian pop star Shakira was also in attendance this year to collect funds for the Latin American Solidarity in Action Foundation (ALAS). Four ex-presidents were also invited to express their concerns on the social problems in the region: Felipe Gonzalez of Spain, Ricardo Maduro of Honduras, Jorge Quiroga of Bolivia and Rafael Flores of El Salvador.

In the end, they all agreed business cannot be divorced from social concerns.

Among the attendees were: Julio Mario Santo Domingo of Valores Bavaria, Gustavo Cisneros of the Cisneros Group, Marcelo Odebrecht of Odebrecht Engineering & Construction, Emilio Azcarraga of Grupo Televisa, Herman Bern, owner of the Playa Bonita Hotel

Calendar of Country fairs

Chiriquí and Veraguas are cattle and
cowboy provinces.

The dry season in Panama means the start of country fair season. In the interior countryside towns and villages, each celebration has a distinct flavor, presentation or theme that reflects the people and traditions of the places they are held. But what they all have in common are throngs of visitors enjoying the music, food, arts and crafts and activities and a chance to connect with local culture.

Here is the calendar covering the coming months' country fairs:

March 6 – 16: The San Jose International Fair in David, Chiriqui Province

March 12 – 16: The San Jose de Tole Fair, Chiriqui Province

March 16 -18: Chitra Fair in Calobre, Veraguas Province

March 27 - April 6: The National Fair in Colon City

March 27 - April 7: La Chorrera International Fair, Panama Province

March 28 through April 2: The Valle de Tonosi Fair, Los Santos Province

April 24 - May 4: The Azuero International Fair, Los Santos Province

Call Bennigan's Causeway at 340-7140 or Bennigan's Avenida Balboa at 214-7022.

At The National Theater

Concert: Gala Lyrica

Thomas Poole is the
star tenor of Gala
Lyrica this Saturday.

Bob Stiff loves Panama. He also loves eating out at local restaurants, but beyond that, Bob is a culture buff. Fusing his passion for Panama and culture, he is producing a one-time show called Gala Lyrica on Saturday, March 15 at 8:00 p.m. at a lofty location: The National Theater.

Tickets to presentations of this caliber usually cost $50 to $100, but this is not for profit. Tickets cost between $10 and $30 for a dramatic evening of Mozart, Strauss, Puccini and Verdi performed by a talented cast of top international singers and one French Horn player.

"This is not a recital, it is a dramatic and entertaining performance concert unlike anything done in Panama before." says Bob. The National Theater stage will be decorated with chandeliers, using lighting changes to set the mood and the singers will "act out" the classic pieces they will be singing in French and Italian.

Hear classic Mozart, Strauss and Puccini for as little as $10.

Hand-picked performers from around the world are coming to Panama especially to perform in Gala Lyrica. The star of the show is Thomas Poole, a tenor from the Washington, DC who has performed all over Europe and North America. Other performers are from Ukraine, the US, Nicaragua and Panama.

The Trump Ocean Club and Quintessentially are sponsoring the performance. During intermission, complimentary wine will be served thanks to Felipe Motta.

Tickets to Gala Lyrica are available at Blockbuster and at the box office on the night of the event.
