El Valle

A mountain retreat
with something for all

El Valle has a wide array of offers for tourists.

Panama provides tourists and residents with the opportunity to find higher elevation and enjoy a spring-like climate all year round in the many mountain towns throughout the republic. One such mountain destination is El Valle de Anton, located just over two hours outside of Panama City in the Cocle province. It is easily reached by car (watch for the sign indicating the turnoff along the Inter American Highway heading west) or by bus (express service from the Albrook terminal for under $5).

It is inarguably one of the most popular mountain retreats in the country, with an array of activities to entertain all. Commonly know as “El Valle”, the town is situated in the crater of a long-dormant volcano, at an elevation of 600 meters (1,900 meters) above sea level. Flowers and abundant greenery surround the cozy cottages, hotels and restaurants.

One of the many picturesque waterfalls in El Valle.

One of the main attractions is the Piedra Pintada (painted stone), giant petroglyphs that can be seen on a hike through the mountains. More information on precolonial art is available at the museum, located next to the church. The museum also has a collection of religious art, 19th and 20th century ethnology, ceramics, pictorial art and geology displays.

Every Sunday, the “Mercado Publico” (Public Market) buzzes with activity. Fruits, vegetables and legumes are the standard offer. Over the years people began selling include plants and arts and crafts created by local artisans. The market is located near the center of town, some 500 meters down from the museum.

Animal life can be appreciated at the El Nispero Zoo, set in a lush tropical garden. The tropical birds and animals are native to Panama. The main attraction is the golden frog, a bright yellow species in danger of extinction. Birders enjoy hiking Cerro Gaital. Extreme sports lovers take a zip line canopy tour. Everyone enjoys the hot springs and mud baths.
