490 years of Panama City

Panama La Vieja
Panama City was founded 490 years ago, on August 15. The remains, commonly referred to as “las ruinas”, of the first formally-established city in Panama are still standing today. Cultural activities will take place leading up to the big day next weekend to celebrate the foundation of “Panama La Vieja” – Old Panama. A visitor’s center at the site (located at the end of Via Israel or Via Cincuentenaria, facing the Southern Corridor marine highway) provides information about the way the old city worked and how people lived here nearly 500 years ago. The ruins are reminiscent of medieval castles.

On Thursday, August 13, a poetry recital will take place at 7:00 p.m. and on Friday, August 14, a folklore dance presentation will take place at the same hour. On Saturday, August 15, different folklore presentations and poetry recitals by students will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.. The recitals, called “declamaciones”, are a customary national tradition. The proud recital of specially-selected poems written by acclaimed Panamanians is highly respected for the nationalistic values which are transmitted in the phrases.

Entrance to the informative visitor center at Panama Viejo and a trip to the top of the-restored tower costs $3, retirees $2, children 50 cents and under eight years free. Enjoying the activities and browsing handicrafts is also free of cost. Information: 226-8915 or 226-9364.
