A special museum in
the centre of town

By Logan Fisher

This statue of Ricardo J.
Alfaro depicts the former
president whose office
is now a museum in Bella Vista.

Conveniently located in the heart of Bella Vista, is the Historical Museum of Dr. Ricardo J. Alfaro. This authentically local museum offers an appealing insight into the accomplishments of this extraordinary Panamanian leader who served a short presidential term here in 1931. On arrival at the museum, located on the ground floor of Edificio Hispania on Parque Urraca, a friendly and informed staff is more than happy to dive into the details of the extraordinary artifacts presented.

The museum is Alfaro’s former official office, creating an atmosphere that is timeless and genuine. One´s eye cannot help but be attracted to the endless amounts of artifacts. Items such as his own personal furniture – including desks and chairs are on display today as they were decades ago. Swords, art, his attire worn at dignitary functions and original maps abound. The extensive library is also that of Ricardo J. Alfaro, and includes some works inherited from his father.

Among his many notable achievements, Ricardo J. Alfaro took the presidential office of Panama in 1931. He was born in Panama on August 20, 1882. In 1918 he received the title of Doctor of Law and Political Science from the National Law School of the Republic of Panama.

In 1993, following approval by the Alfaro family, the National Institute of Culture issued Resolution No. 012/Al of 29 March 1993, which declares the Archives of Dr. Ricardo J. It is a place that caters to all guests and is enjoyable – whether the visit is long or short.
