Panama City has really come into its own with the February 1 launch of the new City Sightseeing tour busses. The bright-red, five bus fleet invites tourists to "hop on" and "hop off" as they please along a route that's perfect for seeing nearly all the notable sights of the capital city.

The busses have quite a presence, one that has not gone unnoticed among all levels of society in the capital city. Tourism is certainly here to stay.

These double-decker, London-style busses have a retractable roof in the open-air section above and an air conditioned cabin below. Both areas enjoy high-tech features that come with this international tour bus franchise that offers this service in over 100 top cities around the world. Passengers hear about the sights they are seeing along the way in one of six languages, prompted through a GPS system.

Nine stops are at:

Multicentro Mall, Calle 52 (Tre Scalini Restaurant), Parque Urracá, Mi Pueblito, Albrook Mall, Miraflores Visitor Center at the Panama Canal, Biomuseo, Isla Flamenco on the Causeway and Casco Viejo at the end of Phase II of the Cinta Costera. The first and last stops are at Multicentro, at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m., respectively.

International franchise

City Sightseeing is a franchise of the internationally-known operator City Sightseeing Worldwide, which is in over 100 cities around the world. Call 392-6000 for more information.

Ticket pricing

There are two ticketing options, a 24 hour or a 48 hour pass, at a cost of $29 or $39. Cost for children is $24 or $34. Tickets will be available in hotels and travel agencies. Dedicated ticketing will be available at Multicentro, Calle 52 (Tre Scalini Restaurant), Parque Urraca and Albrook Mall.

Safety is one of the selling points for the new system. Operators report that the five busses are always connected to the central office in case of any emergencies.

The use of GPS geo-locator technology allows bus drivers to always make sure they are 30 minutes behind the bus in front of them on the tour. Five busses take two hours to complete the circuit around Panama City and out to the Canal and the Causeway. Call 392-6000 for more information… or just hop on!
