Replica of 16th-century ship drops anchor in Amador

A replica of the ship “Victoria” in which Sebastian Elcano completed the first circumnavigation of the globe in the 16th century recently visited Panama as part of its maiden voyage. The ship was among the fleet which sailed in 1519 under the command of Fernando de Magallanes. Built in Spain and christened by King Juan
Carlos and Queen Sophia, the ship left Seville for the New World last October 12. After transiting the Panama Canal and a brief stop in Panama City (during which the crew offered lectures at the Panama Canal Museum), the 21st century’s Nao Victoria left for the Far East on December 26.

The 21st century version of "Nao Victoria"

Just as 2004 gives way to 2005, the replica of a 16th-century ship silently passes through the Canal’s Miraflores Locks – an event witnessed by three-month-old Giancarlo Cortese, from Oregon, U.S.A. and his father Vito Pietro. (See page 3) The Visitor takes this opportunity to wish a very happy and prosperous New Year to all!
